Local, Responsible, Organic

The village of Glenarm is tucked into the coast of Northern Ireland’s County Antrim whose fast flowing coastal waters are home to the only Atlantic salmon farmer in the Irish Sea. Established in 2008, Glenarm Organic Salmon Ltd is a Northern Irish Organic Salmon company that embraces a very simple philosophy. “Everything we do, we do to the highest possible standards and to the very best of our ability”! They practice responsible environmental stewardship to ensure that their farming activities do not compromise wildlife and help and conserve Northern Ireland’s rich biodiversity. They are a locally focused company that sources as much of the material needs as possible from local businesses to support their community. The Glenarm concept for organic salmon is to produce fish in as natural an environment and method as possible using a set of production standards that are established and approved by a governing body, The Global Trust, and audited by a licensed, independent certifying agency. Glenarm’s “aim is to produce salmon that match if not exceed the quality of wild Atlantic salmon but with more consistency in texture, shape, size & flavour”. Well said.

Quality from the clean, clear coastal waters of the Irish Sea

Glenarm Organic Salmon are renowned for their outstanding quality derived from the clean, clear and fast flowing coastal waters of the Irish Sea.
Their seawater farms are located in the very exposed and energetic coastal waters of the North Channel in the Irish Sea where currents and tidal flows ensure optimal exercise and firm muscle formation in the salmon.

Glenarm salmon have plenty of space to grow with maximum stocking densities of 10kg per cubic meter. A living environment that reduces stress and promotes healthy growth and freedom to thrive in isolation from any other producer. No antibiotics or medicines to treat disease or parasites endemic to wild salmon are used. This is just one of the things that make Glenarm salmon unique.

Husbandry practices focus on the health and welfare of their salmon to ensure a clean environment is maintained. Every activity undertaken on the farm also ensures the fish’s ability to behave as naturally as possible is not compromised.

Glenarm raises their salmon to the very highest standards and are continually assessing the health and quality of their stock to produce salmon that match if not exceed the quality of wild Atlantic salmon but with more consistency in texture, shape, size & flavour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Organic farming is framed by a legally defined set of standards and regulations with criteria that extend beyond legal requirements imposed upon the conventional industry. The conventional industry has to meet some legal requirements (for use of therapeutic agents etc.), yet are not obliged to extend any improvements or restrictions beyond those legally required and are not necessarily audited by any independent third party agency. A conventional farm may in fact extend practices far beyond the legal requirement, but those certified organic are required to do so and must be subjected to independent auditing of those requirements.

Wild fish cannot be classified as “Organic” as there is no possible way to control the fish movement, input (diet) or exposure to noxious contaminants. Wild fish may migrate through polluted waters or over-eat a particular food source in a given area (thus damaging the balance of the eco-system). In addition there is no possible way to monitor the health of the wild fish or prevent the introduction or exposure to parasites. Essentially, “Organic” is defined by the ability to control all applied input, health and output variables of the salmon. “Organic” refers to the ability to control the variables that are controllable and quantify variables that are both controllable and uncontrollable while “wild” is inherently uncontrollable.
